Veterinary Student Externship
Our veterinary team is committed to providing fourth-year veterinary students with comprehensive ER medicine and surgery clinic rotations. Externship experiences are open to fourth-year veterinary student applicants enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary college.
Those interested in an externship opportunity can look forward to:
- A hands-on educational experience at our ER and surgery hospital PETSURG and ER4PETS.
- Observe and participate in emergency medical procedures, including trauma management and resuscitation.
- Mentorship from a team of experienced veterinary staff.
- Gain hands-on experience in both soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.
- Observing advanced surgical and emergency procedures.
- Develop familiarity with emergency diagnostic tools and techniques (e.g., ultrasound, radiography).
- Observing the decision-making process and management of cases.
- Understand the triage process in emergency and surgical cases.
- Participating in veterinary case rounds.
- Mentored preparation of case and subject presentation.
- Practice post-operative care, pain management, and monitoring of critically ill patients.
Duties for vet student externs from AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges include:
- Primary, mentored surgical and medical case responsibility, including patient examination, assessment and formulation of a diagnostic and treatment plan.
- Medical record keeping in a S.O.A.P. format.
- Care of hospitalized patients.
- Evaluating imaging, laboratory, and other diagnostic findings.
- Assisting with surgeries, cystocentesis, venipuncture and laboratory procedures, placement of IV catheters, assisting with anesthesia, and postmortem examinations, administration of treatments, presurgical examinations, assistance with bandaging, and other duties depending on the patients presented.
- Participation in case rounds.
